Adult Literacy Program

Adult Literacy Program was launched on the 7th of Dec 2009 at our Chilla Khadar Basti School, Mayur Vihar, Delhi. The program aims to educate the illiterate adults from the community.

28 women including two school drop-outs are attending the first batch of our literacy program. We follow the curriculum designed by Jamia Milia University to help such deprived people across the country. Among them only 4 have undergone primary schooling during their childhood in their village in Bihar.

Class in progress at the Basti School

These women attend the school for 90 mins in the morning for 5 days a week before going to work.

Pratima Devi, a 30 year old with 4 daughters is a happy woman at the basti for now she can pursue her dream of being an educated mother to her kids. She works as a labor at the farm fields for her living. Her husband, who runs a small shop at the basti looks after their 1 1/2 month old daughter while she attends the school in the morning. They have been living in this basti for over 10 years now with a family income of 2-3 thousand a month.

She feels that education can help her in all ways in life and certainly has an edge over other    students in the class for now as she has not fully forgotten what she had learned during her school days as a kid.
